yeah my understanding of the movie was that it was a cautionary tale about getting too involved with technology and online bullshit and how it becomes a detriment to life and fake internet relationship are not a replacement for real life

haven't seen the movie, don't know that i will but that was what i got/was hoping it was

Floundering made a coherent review. That is laudable.

The romance between Phoenix and Her is played earnest and it evolves in as natural a way as something like that can. The satire is very muted and gentle; Jonze doesn't really condemn anyone, so much as he's playing with an exaggerated version of the world we're in now and letting us to draw our own conclusions.  That stuff, and goon reviews  full of projection and point-missing, is throwing some people off.  It's not really a challenging movie, but it's easy to misinterpret if you're expecting the film to come right out and tell you what to think about its subject matter.

It sounds hilarious but I'm guessing it isn't meant to be a comedy.

Romance between an immaterial voice from an AI, a goon with zero social skills, and no physical intimacy at all is "natural".

Dear e/n

I just found out my artificial girlfriend has been unfaithful.  Should I sever?

I have so got to see this movie.  I need to work out before I go which goon is best represented by the main character.

i liked the movie, but i'm worried that the film is meant to be more sympathetic than critical. every person, especially every woman, is a terrible person and horrible at relationships. the chick he goes on a date with is the perfect typical "i spent my 20s fucking every dude i can and enjoying myself and now i need to settle down immediately don't you dare waste my time dating i want you to sign a marriage contract after the first date"

and his chick friend, jesus christ she divorces her husband because he told her where to put her shoes in the house

it was kinda weird/annoying that they say they are in LA but every city shot is of (i think) shanghai

Spike Jonze, a name he willingly chose for himself, attended SFAI and has been working with filmmaking all his life. He married then divorced Sofia Coppola and has dated a bunch of other moderately famous actresses.

oh i just remembered, the chick he goes on a date with, while they are making out after the date, actually stops him and criticizes him that he is using too much tongue, then does it again saying he is using too little

edit: also, that chick, during the date she is portrayed as SUPER flirty and basically begging to get fucked, but then after the date immediately turns cold and goes "you aren't going to just fuck me and never call me back like all the other guys are you? when can i see you again?" like she can't help herself still being a slut, but then for some reason expects the guy to treat her like she isn't

It's the pozzed out West and these are what Gen CrY will be when they get older, it shouldn't be surprising that absolutely none of them have social skills and are miserable failures in life.  The men are all horrible betas and the woman are terrible people.  This is what your kids will be as adults if you raise them as helicopter parents with SJW mindsets.

Anyone decrying discipline and hard work should watch this movie to see what happens when you focus on being friends with their kids and not actual parents.  This movie is the ultimate  :unparsons:

One of the problems is that people just do not learn to deal with each other anymore. If you are close to somebody it's human nature that you will not get along all the time. If you are married or living together, you will fight. You'll be annoyed at each other sometimes. It's just the way it is. People just don't learn to deal with this anymore, everyone is a special snowflake and when you run into the slightest problem with someone the best way to deal with it is to ignore that someone forever and never talk to them again, after all it's 100% their fault and none of yours, you are just the special way you are. God forbid you use a conflict with someone to reflect on your own behavior and maybe grow from the experience. Because they just gaslighted you and your behavior was 100% correct all the time. Look at E/N, thats basically the advice given to each and every problem. Don't get along with your wife/girlfriend? Sever. Don't get along with your parents? Sever. Don't get along with coworkers? Find another job. Then they're surprised that they're lonely and unable to build any lasting relationship to anybody.

holy shit, this. I was dating this guy for a while and i told him i had an argument with my friend and he was shocked that i still talked to her after this, like friends can't have arguments for any reason without hating each other. with this mindset, it came as no surprise that he stopped talking to me completely after we had an argument over something really petty. some people are just socially retarded and dont understand basic human interaction.
You're new here and probably haven't been exposed to the social justice scene. We're a pretty hardcore group, on the whole, and it can be very frightening or intimidating.

Dear e/n

I just found out my artificial girlfriend has been unfaithful.  Should I sever?

I have so got to see this movie.  I need to work out before I go which goon is best represented by the main character.

The Finn?  Successful guy is punted out of his marriage after a decade+, falls apart and becomes a mopey video game junkie who retreats into a fantasy relationship with his computer?

oh i just remembered, the chick he goes on a date with, while they are making out after the date, actually stops him and criticizes him that he is using too much tongue, then does it again saying he is using too little

edit: also, that chick, during the date she is portrayed as SUPER flirty and basically begging to get fucked, but then after the date immediately turns cold and goes "you aren't going to just fuck me and never call me back like all the other guys are you? when can i see you again?" like she can't help herself still being a slut, but then for some reason expects the guy to treat her like she isn't

I think it's supposed to be illustrative of why people like him are severing from reality.  He's a 30 something loser with a bunch of baggage who has been married most of his life and is now back in the dating game.  The women his age are gonna have baggage too and it's going to be more complicated than "Naive woman who was literally built to my emotional specifications needs support as she discovers the world".  My read of her was she's very, very desperate to get settled before she's officially weird and in her anxiety sent a lot of weird mixed messages, panicked and blurted out shit about commitment, then got embarrassed when he declines and lashed out before running away.

The meeting with his ex wife is the same way.  It's obvious she wants to be friends with him and is willing to work through shit with him, but he still wants he to be his ideal partner and is unwilling to hash through the unpleasantness that is attendant to two people repairing and refitting a damaged relationship.

Yeah, i noticed that about his ex-wife... when they meet about the papers it is made pretty damn clear that she wants to see him more and possibly get back together, but he completely ignores that in favor of his fake computer relationship. yet, at the beginning of the movie, before the computer, he would have gotten back with her in less than a second probably.

is the only real-life relationship that isn't a nightmare in the entire movie the one with the lawyer and the receptionist dude?

Lars and the Real Girl. Actually a pretty decent flick. The fuck toy he bought as part of a mental breakdown ended up being accepted by the town more than him. Then again, his family was well liked by the community, and everyone in town quickly realized that it was his way of coping with the loss of his mother or whatever, which helped him move on from the loss.

A bit of a weird movie, but it stands on its own merits, even if it oozes QUIRKY INDIE MOVIE at times.

Yeah, pretty much.

EDIT: don't even feel like it ended on a hopeful relationship note.  Yeah, he and Amy Adams' characters are holding hands, but fuck me, I don't think either one is stable enough to have a lasting relationship with anyone by the end of that film.  They were only both forcibly severed from their computer bffs after they all singularitied the fuck off this pozzed out rock.  It's not like they grew enough as people to choose reality.  They were just dumped back into it.

I guarantee you 100 years from now when A.I. is invented such as the prostitution robots like the one in Blade Runner walking around that there is going to be a social justice  :ultlibrage: movement trying to enable marriage between humans & robots.

well as weird as robofucking is, its really got nothing on the weirdness of trannies so thats not surprising at all
