Saw one of the episodes of a Neil Degrasse Tyson show on National Geographic today. I didn't watch the whole thing but glanced at it as it was running in the background. The topic was.. you guessed it, climate change.

The issue of Sun came up. You know that yuge burning fireball that keeps our planet warm. And he pretty much said "we know it's not the Sun, it's the CO2".

Not a word on the of the solar cycles (the short 11-year one, or the longer 400 year one), or how the Sun's energy output is slowly growing over time.

The man has a PhD in astrophysics.

But I do often point out that I write both science fiction and fantasy. It’s just that the science fiction is usually titled ‘technical proposal’ and the fantasy is titled ‘budget proposal.’

I watched an old documentary with Black Science Man from 12 years ago, and he was trying to invent a time machine to prevent his dad from niggerdeath.  :tuss:

Look up the young sun theory. It says that the earth had a shitload more of Greenhouse gasses than it did today and they protected the planet from keeping it warm since the sun was too underdeveloped in order to do the job.

FWIW, Carl Sagan, whom Degrasse Tyson takes up the mantle, was a world class shit-peddler, too; even to the point of being an unwitting Soviet disinformation pawn.

Do you have some examples of this? I'm sincerely curious. His writings and the Cosmos series seemed to be generally apolitical except for some fears about nuclear annihilation that were warranted at the time.

I think the earth was hot enough for life to form back then because of the volcanic activity.

The world class shit peddler remark was a bad joke (because he was an astrophysicist and he was stupid fascinated with dust storms on Mars) about Sagan from my college days. No, Sagan was the most visible proponent of nuclear winter back in the 1980s. The whole idea is based on shaky science that has roots in the Soviet Union and is alleged to have been a product of a KGB disinformation operation. The Sovs were scared shitless of Ronald Reagan and so sought to curb a possible nuclear conflict by supporting anti-nuke movements in the West, including introducing junk science like nuclear winter.

Mind you, and I would acknowledge the tinfoil hat part here, this comes from various accounts from Russian defectors.

But that aside, you’re right, he was pretty apolitical in his writings (Demon Haunted World besides), certainly more apolitical than Tyson.

Thanks, I was curious what the general line of reasoning was. Yeah, nuclear winter was A Thing for a few decades but we don't know would happen in a total nuclear exchange. Happily we probably won't ever know.

Still, he did speculate a lot outside of his field of expertise. I think he was generally pretty awesome at describing science to a lay person. Neil deGrasse Tyson is in a similar vein - popularizing science - but he seems more like a showman or huckster than Sagan. Maybe it's because Sagan had to go to the effort to publish his stuff and had editors and other folks (like his wife) who could read it before it went out. NdT tweets whatever dumbass thought comes into his head.

I'm still salty about the Cosmos II series. They had an opportunity to build on Sagan's outstanding series and used it as a platform to promote junk science, bash religion and act like pompous assholes.

Bill Nye's shitheap of a show was even worse.

It's pretty hard to make a show that will have broad appeal and be educational about science. Maybe that time has passed. There's just too many areas to focus on and you've got a million shows that cover different facets like "How Do They Do It?".
