 I'm particularly interested in the Helldump forum and its role in the birth and growth of "callout culture." Rumours about the board's alleged "confirmed kill" are also interesting.

Helldump was a knee-jerk response to the original incarnation of this board, SASS. SASS was established to air grievances about the abuses of power by the admin & mod staff of SA, as well as to point and laugh at goons who were barely functioning human beings.

Helldump took the point and laugh part of SASS but only allowed for "approved" targets. Most of the Helldump superstars were just as pathetic as who they were pointing and laughing at. (an SA user going by Tony Danza's Ho during that period is a pretty good example.) 

D&D was going at full steam during that period as well. It was modded by super far left moderators, with a guy named McCaine being the most hated. He banged on the communist drum loudly, most notably posting about abolishing current age of consent laws, down to ten year old kids. His justification was that "It makes historical sense." He also was gay, which was neither here nor there, but he was pretty damn open about his fetish for skinheads, which speaks volumes about his personality.

Most of this is on the SASS wiki, which is gone, but can still be found on the Wayback Machine. I might be wrong on some of the details here; someone will be along to correct me if I am.

What follows is entirely speculation unless someone can back it up, but many people think SAs political offshoot forum, Laissez Faire, was responsible for the current swath of social justice weirdos and twitter warriors. Once LF was shut down, the more fringe members took to social media, which supposedly spawned the Weird Twitter folks, which then ultimately manifested in the droves of wonks that currently infest reddit / twitter. Again, mostly speculation unless someones got documentation.
